Tae Bo Rock N Sculpt 2 Pack DVD
by Billy Blanks

Reviewed by Carol Kurtz

"This is a test, not a daily workout. It's a test of our willpower and of our physical endurance."

If you’ve ever tried TAEBO, you know what a total body fitness program it is. So when Billy Blanks presented TAEBO Amped last year it was hard to imagine it being better. But adding the three pound amplifier bar to the TAEBO moves takes the workout up a notch. Now in this latest release you’ll get three full TAEBO Amped workouts on two DVDs in this slipcase package.

There is a Bonus Material tutorial where Billy shows you the correct form for the TAEBO positions, invaluable, if you’ve never been in a TAEBO class. It’s important to learn these moves correctly, or you risk injury. But if the proper form is used, the moves are safe and extremely effective. It’s worth taking a few minutes up front to watch this track.

On one DVD is Rockin’ Abs and Rockin’ Buns, two full-length workouts, 42 and 44 minutes respectively. Isolating these muscle groups, they’re aptly titled. It’s all you do. Even though TAEBO workouts almost always hit your buns and abs, you’ve never worked them like this. Abs is solely abs. And Rockin Buns is... well, that.

Billy takes care of us as we’re struggling to get through that fourth set of side kicks, holding the amplifier bar to add to the load. He pops his head up close to the camera and looks intently into your face and asks, “How you doin’?” It’s just what we need to get us through. But if you can’t go the distance at first, Billy suggests you just keep moving and come back and join in as soon as you can. It’s all about starting where you are and giving it all you’ve got. Before long, you’ll notice you’re getting stronger.

Yes, everyone working out with Billy on the DVDs is in great shape. But you’ll hear them screaming and grunting when he “amps up” the moves (doubling the time), and you’ll feel like you’re part of the group, no matter what your fitness level.

Sculpt Express is 45 minutes of mostly strength training. Not so much cardio, but lots and lots of upper body amplifier moves. Lunges are done with the bar on your shoulders to add to the intensity. In fact, very little is done without the bar.

TAEBO is about state of mind. It’s about your will to reach for your dreams (especially if your dream is to have a six-pack or a great butt.) But there really is a spiritual dimension to what Blanks does. He is a man of faith in his Savior, and he inspires us to believe that all things are possible in the realm of our fitness and health, as well. These three workouts deliver a total TAEBO Amped experience (with more emphasis on the Amped than on TAEBO), with concentration on the upper body in Sculpt, and the lower body in the Rockin’ duo. Together they give you three days of variety in a complete package.
