The Strange Man by Greg Mitchell

"Greg Mitchell has earned a spot in the unique genre of Christian horror, and I think this new author is here to stay."

Couple of random thoughts on this one... first, Christian and horror don't seem to belong together, but this is a genre of fiction that is growing rapidly, and I can understand why after reading Greg Mitchell's debut novel.

Second, sometimes books live up to their titles, for instance... "The Strange Man", first in a new trilogy by debut author Greg Mitchell, published by Realms. I have yet to encounter a 'man' who is any stranger than this one (not Greg, the character!).

Thus begins "The Coming Evil" trilogy, and it begins with a bang. The story opens with a tale that will curl your hair, thus setting the tone for the rest of the book. Let me just say old Eldon Granger will never be the same...

And neither will the Weldon family. Older brother Jeff is finding his comfort zone as he attempts to fill his father's shoes as pastor of the local church. While he had never dreamed of ministry, it is now his purpose in life. If he could only bring life back to the congregation...

His wife, Isabella, is the perfect partner for Jeff, able to sense things that he somehow misses. Her strength and deep faith may help them both weather the coming storm... of evil... bwahahahaha... oh, sorry...

Younger brother Dras (his name bugged me to no end, by the way!) is the total slacker of the family. Seems he lives in Never-Never Land and refuses to grow up, spending his rent money on graphic novels, comic books and action figures. He never has felt as if he measured up, so why start now?

His best friend is pretty much all he feels he has, so when Rosalyn begins to pull away from him suddenly, Dras feels adrift and lost. Who is this mysterious stranger who's captivated her attention?

Evil is most definitely lurking in the skies and in the hearts of the townspeople. Who can fight against such a strong tide, and will they win or be overtaken by "The Strange Man" and "The Coming Evil"?

Be prepared to be creeped out and challenged. While this is not the easiest reading material I've encountered recently, it certainly held my attention! I even had moments where there just weren't enough lights on in the house... so don't read while you're alone!

Greg Mitchell has earned a spot in the unique genre of Christian horror, and I think this new author is here to stay. The momentum he's built in the first story is more than enough to carry the reader through to the end, and I'm eager to see where he takes us in the next two books.

So, "The Strange Man" gets four out of five bookmarks from me, but no bonus... I had a few 'lost' moments as I read, and as I said... that name just bugged me... but that's just me.
