FBI criminologist Patrick Bowers finds himself in San Diego to investigate a rash of fires. He begins to reason that what appears to be a random kidnapping and suicide may be related to the arson-induced flames. Digging deeper, he and his partner, Lien-Hua, uncover a frightening biotech conspiracy within Project Rukh. Bowers must discover the truth at all costs and attempt to thwart Shade, the mastermind behind all the evil and destruction.

The Rook is suspense thriller writing at its highest level with complex storylines, unpredictable plot twists and characters who engage the reader in many different ways. It presents a mind-boggling look into the criminal mind.

The developing relationship between Patrick and Lien-Hua is gently woven throughout the investigative work without being distractive or unrealistic. His relationship with Tessa, his step-daughter, is both genuine and emotional; the reader cannot help but hurt and hope with both of them. In the midst of evil, corruption and violence, there is strong current of family values and heart in The Rook.

As a fan of the television series “NCIS,” “Bones” and “Law & Order,” I enjoyed the details of police work and forensics. Filled with clean, crisp dialogue between all the characters, there is even an element of fun-loving banter with Ralph especially with Patrick..

Due to the number of subplots within the storyline, the timing of transitions was sometimes off; just when I felt connected with the action in a chapter or was beginning to understand how it all fit together, it changed too abruptly or too slowly to another subplot . This caused me to back up and reread to make sure I didn’t miss something important or to get my bearings again.

Get ready to flip the pages in James’ newest, The Rook. He is a professional storyteller and he delivers once again. Prepare for a wild ride with an unbelievable conclusion!
