Jesus for President
by Shane Claiborne & Chris
"...the most intriguing combination of an insightful commentary and provocative tour of history I’ve ever read."
Sad to say, there is a rampant pessimism coloring everyone's outlook, especially in the political realm. Why does our beloved America appear to be sliding down the slope economically, politically, morally and spiritually?
This is the most intriguing combination of an insightful commentary and provocative tour of history I’ve ever read. Jesus for President is disarming, convicting, reassuring, deep--yet understandable. Shane doesn’t sugarcoat the conviction or the content. Straight up!
At first glance, you will notice that much attention has been given to
detail and visual impact on the inside. The pages are
overwhelmingly full of factoids, quick quotes, historical insights, inviting colors, photos in a cutting–edge, eye-popping layout.
Some readers would say this is the must-read election-year book for all Americans who call themselves Christ-followers. That is a huge understatement. You may not agree with everything said or even fully be able to put your arms around all of it, but you do need to read it. Jesus for President reminds the believer that sometimes love is misplaced which, no matter how we rationalize, is simply idolatry.
Be prepared to be shocked, rocked and challenged. Here is a sampling of Claiborne & Haw’s hard-hitting writing style:
"Rather than placing our hope in a transitional church that embodies God's kingdom, we assume America is God's hope for the world, even when it doesn't look like Christ."
"Too often the patriotic values of pride and strength triumph over the spiritual values of humility, gentleness, and sacrificial love."
“The danger is that we can begin to read the Bible through the eyes of America rather than read America through the eyes of the Bible. We just want Jesus to be a good American.”
If you don’t want your faith to be stretched and challenged, don’t even think of reading a copy of Claiborne’s newest with co-author Haw! If you don't want to get messy and dirty with the world, forget about Jesus for President.
