A Line in the Sand by
Al & Joanna Lacy
"America is a country build by immigrants, and A Line in the Sand is the interesting story of one such family."
Abram Kane, a strapping Irishman, works at the docks loading and unloading cargo from the many ships that arrive at the Boston harbor. His four sons, Alex, Abel, Adam, and Alan all work alongside him. It’s not an easy way to make a living, and they will never be wealthy, but the family is together.
One day, Alan, the youngest Kane boy, shocks the family when he announces that he’s moving to Texas to learn the cattle ranching business. A wealthy rancher he’s met at the docks is willing to give him a job and teach him how to ranch. Adam soon catches ranching fever, too, and decides he will come later and join his brother in Texas.
Alan sets off on the adventure of his life. In New Orleans, where they must change ships, Alan and his mentor, William Childress, stay with a wealthy plantation owner friend of William’s. Alan quickly loses his heart to beautiful Julia Miller. But what hope is there for a penniless man to marry a plantation owner’s daughter? With dreams of Julia on his mind, Alan sets out to learn all he can about ranching so that he will one day be worthy enough to ask Julia to marry him.
Alan’s family soon joins him at the Circle C ranch, but before they can settle in, Mexico General Santa Anna declares war on the Alamo. Fearing the loss of their future in Texas, Alan and his brother, Adam, race to the Alamo with a motley crew of volunteers. If they can’t turn back Santa Anna’s army, the Republic of Texas could once again belong to Mexico. Will Alan help free Texas and live to realize his dream and marry Julia?
A Line in the Sand, Book One in the Kane Legacy, by popular writing team, Al and JoAnna Lacy, is set during a fascinating time of American history and is sure to stir up patriotism in readers. Alan is a young man with a dream, but when a feudal warlord seeks to steal that dream away, Alan joins the fight to protect the land and people he loves.
This story started slowly, as it in great detail set up Alan’s back story and family history in Boston. The story takes off when Alan meets Julia and then arrives in Texas. Readers will enjoy learning about some of the historical events that led up to the battle at the Alamo, as well as gaining an insider’s view of the horrible battle that set the stage for the fight for Texas’s independence.
Alan makes a good hero, even if he is naïve at times. He’s brave and willing to step in and defend the underdog and works hard to achieve what he wants. He faith sustains him in times of trouble, and he freely shares his Christian faith with others, hoping they will see the Light.
America is a country built by immigrants, and A Line In the Sand is the interesting story of one such family.
