A Lady Like Sarah by Margaret Brownley
"...a heart-tugging romance that will make you smile, even laugh out loud at times, and have you cheering for this unusual heroine."
It will take a miracle for an out-of-his-element preacher to survive his encounter with a lady outlaw
Reverend Justin Wells is bound for Texas. After being falsely accused and chased out of his Boston church, he wonders if God can still use him. And yet, he believes God is sending him to Texas for a purpose. But along the way, he stumbles upon a badly wounded US Marshal and his prisoner. Justin does his best tend to the injured man and promises to take the man’s convicted prisoner back to Rocky Creek, the very place Justin is headed. But when he discovers the prisoner is a feisty redheaded female, he wavers. Everything within him says it’s not right to hang a woman.
Sarah Prescott is biding her time. Escaping from a marshal might have been nigh on impossible, but getting away from the citified preacher will be a cinch. But the more she gets to know Justin Wells, the less she wants to escape. When Justin tells her it’s possible for her to have a new life in Christ, she scoffs. Sarah longs to be free of her outlaw past, but the preacher doesn’t know she’s a Prescott. And life on the run is all a Prescott knows.
As they journey toward Texas, Justin’s heart goes out to the young woman who tries to save the marshal and comes to Justin’s aid several times. How could she be guilty of a crime worth hanging? Sarah is torn between the need to escape before they get to the Texas border and her desire to be with Justin. He’s unlike any man she’s ever known. What they need is a miracle. But miracles don’t happen to Prescotts.
A Lady Like Sarah is a lighthearted romance with plenty of adventure. The characterization of both the hero and heroine is excellent. Sarah is an unconventional heroine who talks like a hick but will charm you. Justin is a hurting man, who trusts God in all things in spite of being falsely accused and thrown out of his church. But taking a woman to be hanged goes against all he believes in. As they travel many miles together and survive raging storms, fierce Indians, and other difficulties, they both begin to see the strengths of the other. But when it comes time to turn Sarah over to the vengeful marshal in Rocky Creek, will Justin do the right thing?
